Common Foot Problem in Children: Flat Feet (by Sportsperformance Physiotherapy)

Most babies have flat feet at birth. Arches typically form by age 6. About two out of 10 children still have flat feet as adults. Some adults have arches that collapse, a condition known as fallen arches or flatfoot.

What are flat feet?
Flat feet occur when the entire foot is in contact with the floor while standing, rather than having a raised inner (medial) arch.
Flattened arches can lead to knee and hip pain and balance difficulties. Children under five or six typically have no visible medial arch because it is hidden by a ‘fat pad’. This fat pad is gradually absorbed as the child begins to stand and walk.

What causes flat feet?

  • Natural Development: Studies have shown that most children are born with flat feet and that the arches typically develop by age 5 to 6 as the muscles and ligaments in the feet strengthen.
  • Genetics: Research indicates a hereditary component to flat feet, meaning it can run in families.
  • Hypermobility: Clinical studies have found a correlation between joint hypermobility and flat feet in children.
  • Tight Achilles Tendons: Medical literature also supports the link between tight Achilles tendons and flat feet.

How can podiatry and physiotherapy help with flat feet?
An initial assessment will evaluate your child’s feet, muscle strength, posture, walking pattern, and current symptoms to tailor a physiotherapy treatment program focused on:

  • Stretching to lengthen tight muscles in the leg and foot
  • Exercises to strengthen the abdominal and hip muscles
  • Balance training
  • Promoting functional and recreational activities
  • The podiatrist will advise on footwear, insoles, or orthotics to help position the foot better when walking and running. Custom cast orthoses can improve foot function, reduce strain on other parts of the body, and lead to long-term improvement and pain relief.

If you experience any sport-related injuries or need to restore optimal physical health, you should make an appointment to seek advice from a professional physiotherapist or medical expert to obtain a proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
