Choosing the Right Pair of School Shoes
Choosing the Right Pair of School Shoes
(by Sportsperformance Physiotherapy)
As children grow older, their feet develop, making it crucial to select appropriate school shoes that provide comfort and support. Inappropriate shoes can lead to problems, such as foot pain and posture issues.
How often do I need to replace my child’s shoes?
Depending on their age, children’s feet can grow up to one or two sizes per year, so we recommend checking their shoes against their feet every six months to make the judgement call on whether you need to replace the shoes to help prevent potential foot pain or damage.
Here are some key factors to consider when choosing shoes for children aged ten and above:
- Size Matters: Ensure the shoes fit correctly. Children's feet can grow quickly, so measure them regularly and allow room for growth, typically a thumb's width between the longest toe and the shoe.
- Opt for Quality Materials: Look for shoes made from breathable materials like leather or mesh to promote airflow and prevent excessive sweating or odours. Moisture-wicking properties can help keep your child's feet dry and comfortable throughout the day. Quality materials also enhance durability, ensuring the shoes last longer.
- Proper Cushioning and Support: Growing feet need adequate cushioning and arch support. Choose shoes with a cushioned insole and support to promote proper foot alignment and reduce the risk of discomfort or foot-related issues like flat feet or overpronation.
- Sturdy Soles: Opt for shoes with flexible yet sturdy soles that provide good traction and stability, which helps children maintain balance while walking or engaging in physical activities during school hours. Firm soles counters will help stabilize the foot and ankle, reducing the risk of sprains and other injuries.
- Consider Velcro: Encourage independence by choosing shoes with Velcro straps that your child can easily manage independently, which promotes self-sufficiency and saves time during hectic mornings.
- Prioritise Comfort: Let your child try on different shoes and consider their feedback. Comfort is key, allowing them to focus on their studies and daily activities without distractions from uncomfortable footwear.
- Break-in Period: Introduce new school shoes gradually, allowing your child to wear them for short periods initially to break them in.
This will help prevent blisters, rubbing, and discomfort as their feet adjust to the new footwear.
-
Regular Evaluation and Replacement: Pay attention to signs of wear and tear, such as flattened soles or frayed materials, and replace the shoes accordingly.
Investing in well-fitted, supportive school shoes for children is essential for their foot health and overall well-being. You're setting them up for a successful and comfortable school experience by prioritising comfort and support!
