Visit any commercial gym, and you are bound to find numerous fitness trainers allowing their clients to perform exercises with less than optimal exercise form.  And while it might be tempting to excuse this breakdown in proper exercise form on the client’s lack of coordination, the truth lies just under the skin.

 

In many instances, incorrect exercise form, such as a client’s heels coming off the ground while performing a simple bodyweight squat, is due to restrictions and tightness in the connective tissue surrounding their muscles.

 

By utilising a systematic system of myofascial stretching, the removal of these restrictions in tight connective tissue is quickly and safely remedied, allowing clients to move and function safely and efficiently.

What is Fascia?

Fascia is the connective tissue that connects, wraps and joins muscles together, which also acts as a lubricative proprioceptive organ, provides feedback to the central nervous system. Rather than thinking of the human body is comprised of 600 distinct and individual muscles, it should be thought of as one large muscle with 600 subdivisions held together by fascia - when one part of your body moves, the rest of your body follows.

 

Without fascia giving form and structure to the muscles, like scaffolding to a newly constructed building, the muscles in the human body would not have a solid foundation from which to generate movement.

 

Since fascia surrounds every muscle in the human body, any tightness or restrictions in this connective tissue will not only increase your risk of injury but decrease athletic performance and recovery. The greater the restrictions, the greater the breakdown in movement and mobility. You wouldn’t attempt to run a marathon in pants three sizes too small, neither should you try to increase mobility or fitness levels with restricted fascia.

 

Additionally, when it comes to strength training, tight fascia also inhibits muscle growth by preventing nutrients from moving in and metabolic waste out of cell.
