Benefits of pelvic floor exercises for women/pregnant women (by Sportsperformance Physiotherapy)

Get familiar with your pelvic floor muscles. Pelvic floor exercises are important during pregnancy and in the postpartum period. In addition to promoting perineal healing, strengthening the pelvic floor muscles can aid in bladder control and alleviate bothersome issues like urinary leakage.

Spend some time doing pelvic floor exercises every day will make a difference in your health!

Pelvic floor exercises can strengthen the pelvic floor muscles and prevent/ improve various lower abdominal issues in women, including:

  • Prevent urine leakage when you cough, sneeze or jump
  • Prevent or correct prolapse (drooping) of bladder, uterus or bowel due to weakening pelvic floor muscles
  • Alleviate vaginal laxity
  • Relieve sexual intercourse pain
  • Address abdominal or core weakness
  • Prevent urinary and faecal incontinence
  • Ease back pain

For pregnant women, pelvic floor exercises have additional benefits:

  • Assist in supporting the increasing weight of the fetus
  • Help mothers learn to relax the pelvic floor muscles during delivery, potentially facilitating vaginal birth

Pre-natal PhysiotherapyPhysiotherapy during your pregnancy is designed to prevent problems and to treat any aches and pains which occur as the pregnancy progresses.

Post-natal PhysiotherapyAfter the baby is born (Post-natal), looking after a baby involves lots of strain on your back from bending and lifting. In addition, sitting to feed your baby, may also lead to back problems if you don’t pay attention to your posture. Our physiotherapists will advise you an individually tailored programme of exercises to return you to pre-pregnancy fitness, addressing any weakness in the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles as well as exercise to close any separation of the abdominal muscles.
