Syren brings a unique perspective to performance psychology, informed by a lifetime of high-level competitive experience. Growing up in a family of elite athletes—including an Olympic multiple gold medalist—he was the NSW State Junior Golf Champion and played centerfield on the NSW State Junior soccer team. As an adult, he has represented Hong Kong on the National Golf Team on numerous occasions and is the first and only person to compete in Asia Pacific Golf Confederation events at the Open, Mid-Amateur, and Senior age levels., and has more recently achieved a World Amateur Golf Ranking of 1764.
In addition to working with individual performers in a variety of sports, Syren's consultancy practice extends beyond the traditional sports arena. He has worked with clients who operate under high-stakes conditions including the Hong Kong Ballet and the Cirque de Soleil. His experience encompassesranges from working with professionals in other high-pressure contexts, such as a commercial airline pilot facing critical examinations, to a young performer preparing for auditions at The Royal Ballet School, London.
Syren’s approach recognizes that peak performance outcomes rests on the interplay of five key factors—technical, physical, nutritional, strategic, and mental. He helps individuals to understand their own performance context and to develop mental skill sets that optimise performance. You can read more about his approach here.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours 1 and University Medal) in Psychology from the University of Sydney, where he was awarded the Australian Psychological Society Prize. He subsequently completed a Master of Science at the Department of Experimental Psychology at the University of Oxford as a UK Commonwealth Scholar, followed by a Master of Arts (Distinction) from the University of London, City. |
